Proving that San Antonio fashion week is both accessible to and open for all of the community, day 3 of fashion week featured two events that were both free to the public.
One event was the Elaine Turner fall fashion launch party held at the Elaine Turner boutique on Broadway where proceeds from purchases of the night benefited The Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas.
The other event, the one I attended, held downtown at the Crowne Plaza, was the International Academy of Design Technology’s Illuminate designer showcase: Fashion. Art. Cocktails. Ten lucky students from IADT showed their work in a live interactive runway emceed by Cassandra Lazenby of the Fox at 9 morning news show.
Hosted by IADT, this night was dedicated to help further the names and statuses of the designers showing: Carol Blentlinger, Alison Johnson, Valerie Perez, Miriam Vasquez, Lena Timmons, Friedad Lopez, Erin Onstad, Lorean Auguste, Catalina Berst and Mark Anthony Valdez. Each designer had a table placed around the room that featured their sketches, inspirations, fabric choices, and look books of previous works. It was an interactive environment that encouraged the attendees to get a closer look at the designers and their style. Pieces could be bought right off the runway, or you could talk to the designers present about making something unique for you.
Models, fresh off the runway, mingled with the crowd as walking advertisements for the designers. It was a chance to see the workmanship and detail of each piece up close.
Department chair for IADT, Cynthia Chapa, told me, “The purpose of the event was to provide a platform so our students would be able to showcase their work to the San Antonio community and get their names out as designers. It is an amazing feeling to see the students work so hard on their garments and then see the final product on the runway- we at times feel almost like proud parents knowing how much time and effort went into each garment and collection.”
